Comments: There is a real gap in the preservation of buildings from the first third of the 20th Century in the City. Although not he prettiest from the outside, the number of small details in and out make it special. These have been lost in other situations e.g . The Royalty in Gosforth (have photos of demo;ition). Pilgrim Street really needs a lift - this could be the the spark - but needs to retain some historical identity. Facilities for dancing, skateing and music are limited - would seem perfect size for ballroom etc without ripping it apart.

Comments: It is clear from examples around the world that city/town centre cinemas provide a C21st century leisure use, a focal point for a community, a sustainable night out, a memory box and a stunning example of C20th architecture all in one building. They are often an anchor for the continued vitality of city centres. Sustainability and Vitality are key objectives of Government advice in PPGs 6 and 13 to name just two. Cases such as Clevedon and Walthamstow show it can be done...

Comments: Anyone who has ever lived in Newcastle upon Tyne knows that The Paramount Theatre (better known as the former Odean Cinema) is part of the very fabric of the city, without which Newcastle would be irreparably, irretrievably damaged. While we all welcome further development and regeneration of Newcastle, it must be done in a way consistent with the city's history and architecture, not in conflict. The destruction of the historic Virtorian Handyside Arcade was a huge error which is now too late to remedy. Let's not make the same mistake twice.

Comments: As one of the founder members of the original preserve the paramount campaign, ( chairman of the Tyneside Committee of the Northumberland and Newcastle Society), I am so pleased that others in the city and throughout the country see the benfit of preserving this magnificant building. The lastest information regarding the importance of the theatres architects Verity and Beverley has been passed on to English Heritage hopefully to be submiited to the DCMS. We now know that the building has been sold to a developer called Newcastle Properties based in Bedfordshire. The Laeeting Agents are Lamb and Edge. We have had a letter of support from MP for Newcastle Central Jim Cousins regarding the situation. We feel that the decision to de-list was wrong and the case should be re-opened in the light of new information not made available to the DCMS by the former owners, Cinven. Unfortunately we have been unable to get support from Newcastle Council; Northern Arts; and the Newcastle Gateshead Initiative. We do have support ffrom English Heriatge;RIBA Cinema Thatre Association; North East Civic Trust; the Twentieth Century Society;RIBA; Verity and Beverley; Lords Putnam and Falkland and many others. What we need is national exposure and someone such as Ridley Scott to come to the rescue. Keep up the ggod work.

Comments: Sustainability advocates the recycling of old buildings. Listed buildings require to be retained. Newcastle has already fallen foul of hasty development and lost much of it's architecturally special streetscape (obviously a lot has also been retained).

Comments: I began work at Odeon Newcastle about 3 months before it closed down. I have gone over to the new site however it really isn't the same. I, and many of the other employees that worked at the old site, agree that the old Odeon had far more character than our big, new multiplex. I miss the old site terribly...I cannot imagine what it like for people who worked there for much longer than 3 months. It's a lovely old building that should not be destroyed and I would be pleased if I would be able to go back in there one day and see it in all it's glory.

Comments: It's a beautiful building inside and out, and could be a fantastic centrepiece for the city if it were preserved and reopened as an entertainment venue. Newcastle doesn't have enough mid-size multi-use entertainment venues, and "The Paramount Theatre" is even a nifty brand name with which to relaunch it. This is a real opportunity for developers and for the city, and listed status for the building would ensure that the opportunity is not lost.

I was a regular visitor to the Odeon throughout my teenage years and will be sad to see it go. It has a bigger screen and auditorium than most of the other Tyneside cinemas and is certainly the best located.
