Location: newcastle Country: u.k. Comments: IF THE CITY HALL IS TO BE DEMOLISHED TO MAKE WAY FOR A NEW POOL, SURELY IT WOULD MAKE SENSE TO RESTORE THE ODEON AS A MUCH BETTER REPLACEMENT. AND IT WOULD BE LESS EXPENSIVE THAN A NEW BUILDING. WHEN THE ODEON WAS A SINGLE FULLY EQUIPED THEATRE IT WAS ALWAYS MUCH BETTER IN ALL RESPECTS THAN THE CITY HALL. THE ODEON IS A BEAUTIFUL BUILDING AND MUST BE SAVED.

Great place and a lovely building. Don't waste it just for the sake of some awful new glass structure plonked where the Mayfair used to be.

Location: Morpeth Country: UK Comments: Culture - definition of: 1. the appreciation and understanding of literature, arts, music, etc. 2. the customs, ideas and civilisation of a particular people or group 3. a developed understanding of the arts. How can Newcastle be the Capital of Culture if the Council don't understand the historical and traditional importance of the Odeon building? The DCMS should re-examine their decision.

Even a non-public use of the building would be preferable to allowing it to be destroyed. That would be an act of vandalism companrable to the loss of the Royal Arcade, two sides of old Eldon Square, or the Old Town Hall and the City Library. Let's not keep repeating past mistakes.

Equally the so-called council heritage officers should be sacked as they are drawing wages on false pretences!!!!! Salford City council officers were equally useless when it came to helping save our cinema the Ambassador from the same fate at the hands of the DCMS. Oh and by the way Tessa Jowell ignores correspondence as do most of the NEW Labour tribe!!!!!
