I was astonished by the scale and grandeur of the auditorium. These Art Deco masterpieces have mostly been robbed from us. This one should definitely be restored and listed. Who will organise the funding campaign to make this happen? It could be a viable multi-media performance space in the future, when the North-East has been sufficiently redeveloped to recover from the economic collapse of recent decades. This recovery will happen, and it would be a short sited and foolish policy to allow such a unique and beautiful piece of history to be destroyed for short term commercial gain.

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne Country: UK Comments: What will it take before Newcastle City Council amongst others learns that we need spaces in the city centre for everybody and not just the 'economically' active 20s and 30s. This building could be used as a suitable space to replace the functions of the Mayfair which reached across all age ranges, and include a role as a cinema too. It is sad to deprive our children/grand children of the magic of the old cinemas, with the art deco lights, photos of stars up the stairs all part of a big treat, now being cyncially replaced by nothing more than an extension of the shopping mall experience taken into cinemas. Where is the pride in our city and its unique features?

Sheldon Hall - signed on 19/04/2004 at 18:53 GMT
Location: Sheffield Country: UK Comments: Newcastle City Council must remember that it has responsibility not just for the present condition of Newcastle's amenities and architecture, but also their past and future. The Odeon/Paramount is not just the only surviving cinema of its age and kind in the North East; it is one of the very few surviving in the entire country. It must not be allowed to rot or be replaced, but should be preserved and fully restored to its original state for future generations. Perhaps Paramount Pictures can be encouraged to lend its support to this campaign?
